About Us

Esperanto Michigan started as a small group of Esperanto learners in June of 2017, during the Esperanto boom on Duolingo. At that time we were known as the “Metro Detroit Esperantists”. As interest grew, we realized that there were few other Esperanto clubs in Michigan and we started to plan on taking our group state-wide. We rebranded as “Esperanto Michigan” and began to grow.

Then the COVID-19 pandemic put an end to that. Additionally, public interest in Esperanto began to wane once again, and we went defunct. Now it appears that there are fewer clubs than ever in the United States, and there is a need to once again organize and gather if Esperanto is to prosper in the 21st century.

So it was decided to pursue the goal of having an Esperanto hub for Michigan, with the hope of renewing interest and giving us a community. Some of us are experts, some of us are still learning; but all of us have a shared interest in the language and culture of Esperanto. Together we hope to further enrich that culture!
